This project began as a fascination with light, color and space.
Project Details
The initial assignment took whatever ideas, hobbies or objects the individual student was intrigued by and tasked us to create an ‘object of curiosities’–derived from the Renaissance cabinets of curiosities, collections of objects whose categorical boundaries had yet to be defined–based on our chosen concepts. The devices were given the function of input and output, where the inner workings were allowed to remain a mystery.
This Object of Curiosities, derived from the ideas of light, color and space, consisted of a series of colorful chambers with a light in the center. These chambers would cast a wash of color over any object placed inside. In this concept, each color carries its own attributes–Courage for Red, Luck for Orange, Passion for Violet, and so on. As objects are placed into these chambers, they become imbued with the characteristics of that color.
As the concept of this Object of Curiosities developed, it was translated into the digital realm with a 24x36 image.
As this translation occurred, it was inspired from drawings by Étienne-Louis Boullée and Thom Mayne. Boullée’s hyperbolic scale evoked feelings of awe and wonder that I hoped to incorporate into the object and Mayne’s collage style of drawing took bits and pieces and created a cohesive whole–another goal of the object.

Iteration 1
Framing the view w/ Boulée precedent
Massive conglomerate of buildings/chambers as focus
Iteration 2
Religious vernacular, utilizing light and space
Object floats, for sense of wonder
Final Image
The project culminates by bringing this Object of Curiosities back into 3 dimensions using Rhino and Unreal Engine. By utilizing these tools, the full scale and effect of what has now become the Chroma Temples can be realized.
